The Right Timing

time-3222267_1280

It is mentioned throughout all ages that doing something at the right time is very important.  I strongly agree and believe that strategic timing is very important in our life, and it can help us achieve our goals more effectively.

The ancient Chinese are also strong believers of getting things done at the right time and besides Feng Shui and the astrology system Ba Zi, they also developed an Almanac also known as the Ten Thousand years calendar or the Farmer’s Calendar. Traditionally,  this almanac is used to schedules important events and activities such as marriage, moving house, building, renovations, travel, trading, opening ceremonies for home or business, buying property, engagement, weddings, signing important documents, Feng Shui activities and more.

Traditionally, in China this calendar is used by farmers to plan their agricultural activities, this is the reason for it’s other name: The Farmer’s Calendar.

In the Chinese Almanac, you will find that each day will carry specific elements and a zodiac sign as well as a the list of activities that you can or cannot perform on that day.  It is important to note that picking the start an event is vital, as it contains the seeds of what is to be unfolded.

In our modern society, the popular requests for the selection of auspicious dates and times are mostly related to property transactions, official opening of events, wedding ceremonies and sometimes for caesarean dates for the birth of babies.  I must add that selecting an auspicious date for a caesarean birth is very complex and personally, I will only accept such requests if the reason for the cesarean is at the advice of doctor.

So, the next time you need to schedule an important an event, perhaps consider to have an auspicious date or time pick to increase the chance of a better journey and outcome.

The Double Nine Festival or Cheung Yang Jie

The Ninth Lunar day of the Ninth Lunar month falls on October 17 this year. This is a special day for the ancient Chinese and still is for many today, as the number 9  is a special Yang number and  it is often associated with the Emperor.  Therefore, the Ninth  Lunar Day in the Ninth Lunar month is considered to be a super Yang and auspicious date.

The  Double Nine Festival’s main activity is  focused on trekking or walking up hills or mountains. It is believed that people can improve their health by taking part in the trekking or walking activities on this day. For me, this is indeed interesting, as 99 in numerology is classified as a Master Number,  and it is also sometimes described as the Eternal Master Number. There are also other information that suggest that walking up the hill or mountain on this day is a symbolic way of reaching new heights.

The Double Nine or the Cheung Yang  Festival is more popular in Hong Kong, Taiwan and China. It is not so widely celebrated in Singapore. I do not know why, but my guess is that it is probably due to the lack of hills and mountains here. With this in mind, if walking or treking on this day symbolically means reaching new  heights, perhaps we can subsitute the mountains by walking up some of the tall buildings in Singapore.  After all, in modern Feng Shui, we do substitute Mountains with Buildings.   Just a practical thought.  However, for those of you that really  wish to walk up a hill in Singapore on October 17,  you can always try  Mount Faber or plan to go on a climbing trip! 😀

Happy Walking on then Double Nine Festival and Good Health to all!

The Rabbit and Mid- Autumn Festival!

cc79011d-0ac5-4ba9-96cf-eb62257a3984Why is the Rabbit synonymous with the Mid-Autumn Festival? The legend behind the Mid Autumn Festival surround the story of a handsome couple: Chang Er and Hou-yi. Hou Yi was the ancient hero who, under the order of the Gods, shot down nine of the ten suns that suddenly appeared in the skies. After Hou Yi successfully completed this task, he met and married a beautiful young lady named Chang Er.

The Gods were very pleased with Hou Yi, and rewarded him with an elixir of life so the he and his beautiful wife could have immortality. However, an evil man found out about the elixir, murdered Hou Yi for the elixir. Chang Er was devastated by her husband’s death and retaliated by drinking all of the elixir. Legend has it that, after drinking the elixir, she floated away into the skies towards the Moon with her pet rabbit in her arms, and this is how the Rabbit became synonymous with this festival.

Celebrating Mid- Autumn festival or commonly known as now as  the Mooncake festival is still very popular today. Food that is synonymous with this  festival are the mooncakes and pomelos. Pomelos are fruits harvested in Autumn in some parts of China and they symbolize plentiful and abundance.

It is a tradition to gift your friends, employer, clients and relatives some mooncakes just before Mid-Autumn festival. Moon gazing is also a part of the ritual of celebrating this festival.  Besides the moon gazing and eating mooncakes, children are given paper lanterns to carry around and  play within the playground or garden.

A Happy Mid-Autumn Festival to all!

Happy Mid- Autumn Festival !

blackmooncakeThe legend behind the Mid Autumn Festival varies but they all surround a handsome couple: Chang Er and Hou-yi. Hou Yi is the ancient hero who, under the order of the gods, shot down 9 of the 10 Suns that suddenly appeared in the skies causing disasters and chaos on Earth. After Hou Yi successfully completed his task, he met a beautiful young lady named Chang Er and the pair fell in love very quickly and got married.

The gods were very pleased with Hou Yi and rewarded him with an elixir of life so the he and his beautiful wife could have immortality. However, an evil man found out about the elixir, murdered Hou Yi and forced Chang Er to give up the elixir. Chang Er was devastated by her husband’s death and retaliated by drinking all of it. It is said that, after drinking the elixir, she became so light that she floated away into the skies towards the Moon. The Moon is known as “Moon Palace” by the Chinese and is described as a cold and lonely place. Chang Er chooses to live there because it is the closest to Earth, where she lived with Hou Yi. Legend has it that those who witnessed Chang Er floating to the Moon noted that she was most beautiful on this night. Subsequently she became known as the Moon Goddess who will bestow blessings and beauty on those who worship her. As a tradition, new toiletries and cosmetics are placed together with other offerings on the altar for her blessings on this night.

Celebrating Mid- Autumn festival, or the Moon cake festival, is still very popular today. Food that is synonymous with the Mid-Autumn festival is such as “Moon cakes” and pomelos. Traditional Moon cakes were filled with lotus seed paste and egg yolk only but today the filling in the moon cake can vary and the cake comes in all shapes and sizes. Pomelos are fruits that are harvested in Autumn in some parts of China and thus symbolize plenty and abundance.

It is a tradition to gift your friends, employer, clients and relatives moon cakes just before Mid Autumn festival. Reunion dinners or family gatherings are organized. In ancient times, dinners were served on the balcony, patio or in the open where people could recite poetry and gaze at the moon. It is an exciting time for children because, as part of the tradition, they are given lanterns to carry and play with in the neighbourhood.
